One of the largest campsites I have ever stayed in. This is the best state park in Virginia. The only downside is that there is not much to do in this are if you don't do any boating or fishing. If you do, this is for you. There is some of the best fishing in the Chesapeake Bay.
This park is built on a swamp marsh. The mosquitoes will eat you alive. We were unable to sit outside without covering in Deet spray. We literally had to run from our car to our motorhome when site seeing. There are not many transient sites available during the pony swim and they make you pay for 4 days in advance. We were put in the tent section with a "weak" 30 amp service. I don't know why anyone would want a permanent site at this park. The only reason we stayed here was because the more popular Toms Cove park was booked.
This is no place for older folks in a motorhome unless you enjoy dry camping. Motorhomes can only use the "C" loop. Generators cannot be used at night. While we were there, the toilets for that loop were under repair. If you are looking for a beach location, this is "not" it. It's a good 800 yards to the beach up and down dunes. It was so hot while we were there, we gave up 4 prepaid nights and where able to find another campground with electric.
Ocean Waves is a real bargain for the area. The only thing that keeps this site from being an ocean view, are the dunes. Many fishermen use this site as a base camp. The staff is very friendly.
